Subject: [*] apple-software-policy.txt
While any clarification of Apple's software license (the one found on files
on ftp.apple.com) needs to come from an Apple attorney, let me spell out
the basics for those people who have questions about it. This is purely my
own opinion and should not be considered binding.
The end-user license basically says that you cannot redistribute this
software once you get it from ftp.apple.com or other source that has a
redistribution license executed with Apple (that is why we can distribute
from ftp.apple.com). The redistribution license is different than the
end-user license. If you have an interest in redistribution rights, you
will need to contact our Software Licensing department at
SW.LICENSE@applelink.apple.com for information. Note that the
redistribution licenses cost money and not everything is available or
covered by this license.
Back to the end-user license. It covers ALL Apple software and information
on ftp.apple.com. Only those items which specifically state that they may
be freely copied may be redistributed without a license, and few if any
items state that.
This is the reason that much of this data is not available at SUMEX or
other ftp sites, but is available on services like CompuServe and America
Online. For SUMEX or another site to legally redistribute this
information, they would need to execute a redistribution license with
Software Licensing. Services like CompuServe and America Online as well as
ftp.apple.com have such licenses in place.

The Cool Address Book Version 0.61 Shareware $3
Image Works Plus 8124 Cross St. North Richland Hills, TX 76180
This is an early release of the Cool Address Book. Many more features are
planed, but I figured many people would find it useful as it is. I worked
very
hard on it until I got it to it's current condition. Since then I have just
been using it. It has come in very handy.
So, I am testing the market for yet, another address program. If you are not
a
data-base programer - I think you will like this one a great deal. The
buttons
will run the entire program. You do not need to mess with the menus, but you
can if you want.
If you like this version and register it with a $3 shareware fee, all future
updates will be free to you. If you send a disk and an envelope with two
stamps
on it, I will fill it up with my other programs and send it back to you. If
at
least 10 people register this program, I will polish it up and add all the
features that are planned.
Special Notes: % The Cool Address Book does import TEXT files. % The Cool
Address Book does not export text files to other programs - yet, but it will.
%
The Remind feature has not been installed yet, but soon it will show you a
list
of everyone in your address book with birthdays of any month. % There is not
Help feature yet, but a nice one is planned. % The ZipCode bar code feature
has
not been added yet. % The Cool Address Book should work fine with the
HyperCard
Player program except for the Find feature which will not work right now.
Hey this program is still in development -- so send me your ideas. If I can I
will incorperate them into the design. Thank you for your support.

Subject: [*] HyperBibTeX 0.9.8
HyperBibTeX version 0.9.8 (27-Sep-93) is an update
and should replace all previous versions
HyperBibTeX is a Macintosh HyperCard stack for managing
bibliography databases compatible with BibTeX, the bibliography
system used by the TeX typesetting language. HyperBibTeX's
features include:
* entering and editing bibliographic entries using
BibTeX's entry types (Book, Article, Proceedings, etc.),
* checking data integrity and consistency against a set
of authority lists,
* sorting cards on various fields,
* searching the database,
* marking cards individually or with the search function,
* importing entries from a BibTeX file,
* exporting cards to a BibTeX file.
HyperBibTeX requires HyperCard version 2. It runs under
system 6, but the Balloon Help facility requires system 7.
It also runs under HyperCard Player.
Version 0.9.8 is an upgrade that fixes minor bugs and adds
some new features, including automatic conversion between
Macintosh accented characters and TeX macros. If you are
presently using an older version of HyperBibTeX,
I recommend that you upgrade to version 0.9.8.

Subject: [*] MathPad 2.1.5
MathPad is a general purpose scientific calculator that uses text input
rather than a graphic simulation of a hand held calculator. This allows you to
see and edit your entire calculation.
Formulas can be entered directly and different values can be plugged in for
easy
"what if" calculating. Results may be put into a table or graphed. General
purpose arrays allow calculations involving vectors, complex numbers, matrix
algebra etc. MathPad does not perform symbolic manipulations like high-end
commercial programs such as Mathematica but it can handle fairly sophisticated
numerical problems with a MUCH smaller memory requirement (160K).
MathPad 2.1.5 is an upgrade intended to replace the previously posted version
2.0.4. Existing documents will still work with the new version.
New features include:
* 2D arrays can be displayed as grayscale or color images.
* A new command "plotline" specifies line plots for 1D arrays.
* Sub arrays can be selected using the syntax [lo:hi].
* The table command can now automatically print a 1D or 2D array.
* The read and write functions have been improved.
* Background computation.
* Paste of a PICT into the plot.
* Bug fixes.
MathPad runs on a Mac Plus or higher with system 6 or system 7.
This software is free for non-commercial distribution and may be included on
the
info-mac CD-ROM.

Subject: [*] MicroWorld_1.1.sea.hqx
This is a submission made for the author, who does not have internet access.
Here is the README. Manuals are in German and English.
***
MicroWorld is a molecular display program for three dimensional model
renderings (Dreiding, Ball&Stick, Space Fill) from atomic space
coordinates, e.g. from x-ray data, databases, energy optimization
programs, and so on - just look at the included slide show to see what it
is all about. It features powerful functions which are, so far, quite
rare with other programs of this kind (at least the ones under US$ 500):
* Antialiased sticks and mixed model lines
* Depth cueing: impression of three dimensional depth by a change of the
brightness of the model parts with increasing distance to the observer.
* Transparent space fill models.
* Up to three different model types in one model.
* Import of a background picture and optional cast of a model shadow onto it.
* Alignment of the model to a point, a bond, or a plane.
* Display of a color legend for element colors.
* High quality printouts.
* Mathematical coprocessor not necessarily needed.
* Optimized for 256 colors, but also gives quite good results with 16 grays.
Changes since Version 1.0:
-----------------------
- Exclusive, fast, and never seen before antialiasing for sticks and
mixed model lines, at almost the speed of the jagged ones in version 1.0.
- Change in price policy: see the shareware disclaimer at program
start.
- The special math coprocessor version of the program is discontinued
(since only marginable speed advantage in version 1.1).
- Various minor bugs fixed.
- Version 1.0 users caution! Due to the enhanced functionality of the
version 1.1 files (MW-file and MW-picture), they are no more compatible
with version 1.0 files. Sorry, but this had to be done to ensure future
expandability. Nevertheless, your old files can easily be converted to
version 1.1 files by again importing their original TEXT-files
(coordinates) and saving them as MW-files. The version 1.0 folder of
MicroWorld should be discarded and replaced by the version 1.1 folder in
order to completely replace the old, now incompatible, demo-files and
slide shows. Precautions have been made to prevent such format changes in
the future.

"TERMINAL COMPROMISE"
by Winn Schwartau
A high tech thriller that comes from today's headlines!
TERMINAL COMPROMISE: SYNOPSIS
"It's all about the information . . . the information."
From "Sneakers"
Taki Homosoto, silver haired Chairman of Japan's huge OSO Indus-
tries, survived Hiroshima; his family didn't. Homosoto promises
revenge against the United States before he dies. His passion-
ate, almost obsessive hatred of everything American finally comes
to a head when he acts upon his desires.
With unlimited resources, he comes up with the ultimate way to
strike back at the enemy. Miles Foster, a brilliant 33 year old
mathematician apparently isn't exactly fond of America either.
The National Security Agency wanted his skills, but his back-
ground and "family" connections kept him from advancing within the
intelligence community. His insatiable - borderline psychotic-
sex drive balances the intensity of waging war against his own
country to the highest bidder.
Scott Mason, made his fortune selling high tech toys to the
Pentagon. Now as a New York City Times reporter, Mason under-
stands both the good and the evil of technology and discovers
pieces of the terrible plot which is designed to destroy the
economy of the United States.
Tyrone Duncan, a physically huge 50-ish black senior FBI agent
who suffered through the Hoover Age indignities, befriends Scott
Mason. Tyrone provides the inside government track and confusion
>From competing agencies to deal with the threats. His altruistic
and somewhat pure innate view of the world finally makes him do
the right thing.
As Homosoto's plan evolves, Arab zealots, German intelligence
agents and a host of technical mercenaries find the weaknesses in
our techno-economic infrastructure. Victims find themselves
under attack by unseen adversaries; Wall Street suffers debili-
tating blows; Ford and Chrysler endure massive shut downs. The
U.S. economy suffers a series of crushing blows.
>From the White House to the Pentagon to the CIA to the National
Security Agency and FBI, a complex weaving of fascinating politi-
cal characters find themselves enmeshed a battle of the New World
Order. Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll: Tokyo, Vienna, Paris, Iraq,
Iran. It's all here.
Enjoy reading "Terminal Compromise."

Brilliant little program. Snagged it as soon as I saw it. I was _surprised_ to

I have a Daystar Turbo 040 and in my opinion it is less compatible
than the 030 that I had. I get a lot more crashes and init conflicts
they also haven't fixed the printer port problem yet. (Namely that you
can print from the printer port you must use the modem port.)
I have a IIcx and am running mode 32. (plus numerous inits and ext.)
I really liked my Powercache (50Mhz) I don't like the Turbo 040
as much but it could be that most of my problems are init type conflicts
and not Daystar problems per se. I've also found that a lot of
my software doesn't like the 128K cache.
If anyone else has one running on a IIcx (or other mac) I'd like to
hear about any problems and known conflicts/solutions you have.
If enough people respond I'll make a mini-faq.

Subject: Adobe Type Manager & bitmapped fonts?
Is it true that Adobe Type Manager will do nice things for the quality
of bitmapped font printing on my StyleWriter? I remember when I was an
undergrad, our school used LaserWriters and all my fonts were bitmapped
(of course, the printer had some built-in fonts, such as Times, but many
"city" fonts such as Toronto existed only as bitmapped fonts)--and I was
able to print documents using bitmapped fonts without jaggies coming out
from the printout--even at point sizes substantially larger than the
ones I had in my disk's system. Meanwhile, my StyleWriter just doesn't
print bitmapped fonts worth a damn.
Someone told me Adobe Type Manager will let my StyleWriter do virtually
as well as the LaserWriter at smoothing and rounding off bitmap font
edges and corners. That would be nice, since I have a collection of
bitmap fonts such that the font menu goes down to my kneecaps and it
would be nice to get full use of them.

Subject: Any Access Locking Apps?
Well, I've had great luck from all of you before, so here's one more
try:
At our university we have several labs of hard drive macs, networked
either localtalk or ethernet. The servers have their own security,
which we are happy with. However, the internal hard drives are
critical problems (everything you can possibly think of, including
malicious destruction of files and system files). One lab has Guard
Dog, which seems to be prompting a variety of bombs. We tried
FileGuard in the past, but it seems to be incompatible with some of
our apps, as well (at least the apps have problems when we lock down
everything on the hard drive to read only). Our apps include:
Pagemaker 4.0, Photoshop 2.5, Illustrator (?.0), Word 5.1,
QuarkXPress, PixelPaint, Freehand and Works 3.0
The question:
Does anyone know of a better (than the above) shareware/cheap lockdown
program which will allow us to:
a) Prevent access to the system folder.
b) Prevent *permanent* changes in the Chooser (i.e. reboot and
it defaults to a standard printer).
c) Prevent file copying from protected folders (for license
protection).
We have 60+ machines, and the prices of some of the fancier programs
is excessive (especially since we are using FileGuard as the
price/performance model). Anyway, if there are program(s) which would
help us in these three areas, I would be interested in gathering the
responses and posting the concensus/nominations back out to the net.
Thanks one and all.

I need to create a database of the applications we use at my office, and set

periodically scan the network for applications, (and ideally, their version #

the database. What is the best utility for this, if any?
It needs to be straightforward and friendly enough for computer novices, and
we only need to search for applications, although possibly inits and control

[Follow-up to comp.sys.mac.misc or e-mail and I'll summarize]
Well, the old 240LPS is packed to the brim and I can't put off the
upgrade any longer. What do you know (or have heard) about the various
1-1.2 gig drives out there?
I'm looking for the fastest, quietest drive for general use: no serious
multimedia or huge files, no programming with lots of little files. Lots of
text, the usual page layout-wp-illustration stuff. Run of the mill.
What's the most important spec for this kind of performance- spindle
speed, avg. access time, or transfer rate?
I've only ever had Quantum drives, and have been happy with them. But I'm
certainly willing to switch if it seems like a good idea. For the next
couple of weeks I'll continue on my cached IIsi. After that the drive
will live in either a Centris or AV machine (yeah, I know about the
problems with the new SCSI manager).
Any specific comments about Toshiba, Fujitsu, DEC, and Seagate mechanisms
will be especially appreciated.

Matthew Johnson <mgj@doc.ic.ac.uk> writes:

This is true if MacTCP is set to Ethernet (or other non-AppleTalk
encapsulated link) and also set to Server mode. If set to Manual or
Dynamic, it uses other methods to get its address.
>Both of these protocols however are restricted to the local network,
>since they are basically 'cries for help' which would swamp the network if

This is false. The RFC for BootP specifies a method for BootP
forwarding, such that you can send BootP requests which are forwarded
by a router to a remote BootP server. I am not sure about RARP.
>Thus if you are running MacTCP with a Ethertalk as opposed to an Ethernet
>connection then either a local Mac or the router must respond.
No. If you are using MacTCP with EtherTalk or LocalTalk (i.e. DDP-IP
encapsulation), neither BootP nor RARP are used, but instead addresses
are obtained by the MacIP protocol.
>Some appletalk routers will give out IP addresses dynamically
>under ethertalk, but this is a different protocol, and won't consistently
>give the same address to the same machine.
The latter part is again not true. If you are using Server based
addressing, you are correct that different numbers will be given out
each time. This is because there is no "hardware" address at this
level to look at. MacIP is based on AppleTalk encapsualted packets,
and AppleTalk addresses are obtained on the fly. However, you can use
Manual based addressing in MacTCP and the router will give out the
same address to you every time.
>My local appletalk expert disabled this feature on our Webster

Unless the problem was one of security, I don't see what other
problems there could be.
>b.There is a big catch not mentioned in the MacTCP

This is being fixed in the soon to be released MacTCP 2.0.3.

Dear Netters,
Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I don't have time to read long FAQ files.
How does one achieve modem compression speeds. For instance my Quicktel Xeba
96/96 has a compression possibility of 38,400 BAUD using V. 42bis. Does this
speed and protocol happen automatically when it is connected to another modem
capable of that speed and protocol? Or is there some way to manually set the
speed higher than the standard 1000-1500 cps (GIF files to .TXT files) during
my downloads? The computer I am downloading from, a VAX/VMS, has a tendency
to corrup ZIP files so my Mac can't read then during periodic downloads.
So other than attempting to do a file compression, is there another way to
speed up the process of downloading?
The QuickTel Xeba is a Hayes Compatible MNP 5 V. 42bis modem running at 9600
BAUD normally.

Subject: DeskWriter not responsive
Has anybody had this problem?
I'm responsible for 3 Hewlett-Packard DeskWriters (DW, DW C, & DW
550C). With all of them I have chronic problems with disappearing from the
network. Serial connections work (at least sometimes), but network
connections -- which is how I want to use these printers -- are *extremely*
flaky. Sometimes the "DeskWriter Series (AT)" driver (3.1 & 4.0) will
work, and sometimes it will not. With the DW C, sometimes the DW C driver
(3.0) works, but sometimes not. There have been periods where it showed up
in the Chooser, but whenever something was printed to it, it said it
couldn't communicate with the printer.
I know to click on the printer's name, and it's not a conflict with
2 printers with the same name. I've swapped out the connectors more than
twice, and the problem still comes and goes on all 3 printers (on different
physical networks).
I'm now thinking the DW's AppleTalk/LocalTalk controller may be
responding spottily to NBP lookups, but this seems unlikely to still exist
in newer printers, such as the 550C. HP is pretty useless, and the local
dealer can't help.
Does anybody have experience with this problem? May the Chooser
7.3 help? I get the impression it might include a longer timeout for
slower Apple printers, such as StyleWriter II & Apple Color Printer, so
figured this might be helpful.
BTW: These are all un-routed (tiny) networks.
Suggestions or the semi-mythical Chooser 7.3 welcomed and invited.

Subject: Duo Dock problems
I would like to know if anybody have experienced or know anything about any of
the following problems:
o The Duo Dock sometimes seems to loose conneciton with the ADB bus. The
symptom
is that the computer freezes, but at a closer look it is only the mouse and
the
keyboard that doesn't have contact with the computer anymore. The CPU still
works.
The only fix is a restart (the eject button still works though, so if there
are
no documents to save, a push at the eject button gives a clean shut down).
o The StyleWriter II connected to the Duo Dock can't be found sometimes,
though
the printer is correctly connected and actually prepares itself to print. The
problem usually appears only at the first print after startup.
To fix this, I pull the printer cable conector at the Duo Dock and plugs it
back
in. After that, the Print Monitor finds the printer with no problem. It
appears
to be bad connection, but just moving the cable or plug isn't enough. Several
cables have been tested.
o If any key on the keyboard is pressed (shift for example) while the mouse is
moved, the mouse pointer skips 50-100 pixels across the screen. This is very
annoying when drawing or making layouts in FileMaker. The amount of the
skipping
is proportional to the level of mouse acceleration (50-100 pixels at the
highest
acceleration). Several keyboard and mouse combinations have been tested. I
haven't found a fix for this.
Any comments are welcome.

I currently own eDisk 1.2 (the latest version) and have taken my drive

compression/decompression can take a few seconds. I'm probably going to
repartition the drive and just do a x3 expansion on a data partition.
I'm straying off the question, but a few thing should be noted:
*> eDisk can compress to 4:1, but you've pretty much have to have all
text files. Also, the system slows down ALOT and there is a greater
chance for some data corruption (I'm told - I've been using it everyday
for a month and a half now without ONE file corruption problem. And
this
is on a Powerbook 145.
*> The best compromise is to do two things - divide the drive into 2
partitions, like a 15MB System drive and the rest an eDisk drive. S
System files are the real slowdown. Secondly, the software is described
as Slow (4:1), Faster (3:1) and Fastest (2:1 - these are ROUGH
estimates of compression); while you'll take a sizable speed hit when
you go from 2:1 to 3:1, if it's all non-system stuff it's really quite
livable!

1 - it's safe. No crashes here (although it's ONE cavaet is that it
doesn't currently work with virtual memory. VM is a complete waste
of battery on a portable, so this (for me) is a non-issue. This will
very likely change in the next release, I'm told.
1.b - You have to reformat the drive..sorry.
2 - So far, I've got tons of inits and PD stuff, ATM, Reunion, etc.. and
the only issue is VM. Well, a sides issue - you use only the eDisk
version of SCSIprobe. Other scsi installers can screw-up the eDisk
driver, but this is common sense..

it seemed slower and ALWAYS seemed to crash. Ack.

FS-ATC is an air traffic controller software that operates with

full air traffic control from tower, approach/departure and center.
FS-ATC uses some undocumented apple events to find out position, direction,
altitude and speed of FS aircraft. Using this information FS-ATC sends

This version (2.1) introduces a system-wide menu located in the right

This version also provides a workaround for overseas flights. A route

it is very old. Then something new happened that running out of ink.
On doing the test pattern, I observed even steps up to and including
28 were missing. I cleaned the contacts with isopropyl alcohol as
hewlett packard recommended me on the phone. I, of course, did not mention
that it was a refilled cartridge. They 'highly recommend' not refilling
but rather getting a new cartridge every 90 days. So it was I got advised how
to clean the connections with isopropyl alcohol.
First I did this gently and then quite roughly with toilet paper.
Still there was this missing even ink step pattern, but nothing got worse.
With great dismay ha ha ;) , I let go of my pride and went out and
bought a new cartridge. All steps of the pattern were now present.
This suggested to me something about a binary mask electronically
imposed by connections in the back. For example, one connection could mask the
evens another the step mod 4, etc. This would reduce the number of connections
much as the intel chip inside a mac plus keyboard used code to time
multiplex the number of key on offs into line on offs. While this working
hypothesis for the loss of steps is supported by a pattern, one might
imagine it is not supported by the fact that a magnifier revealed to me 56
connections for 50 steps of ink outside. However, many of these connections
seemed to go nowhere, ie. inside the ink cartridge.

I think that one of the main reasons Intel had to put an add into MacUser is
thay are hurting for business. One of the most recent stats to come out in
the
business journals mentioned that Macintosh sold to the same percentage of the

I think that says quite a bit about the Macintosh way of life.

Subject: LW 8.0 users--HELP (Q)
I just downloaded LaserWriter 8.1.1 from ftp.apple.com. I had hoped that it
would be improved over 8.0, which was reputed to have some problems, but given
what I've seen, I'm not so sure. In particular, a couple of things that were
identifed in the READ ME file of v. 8.0 are still there, to wit:
"All LaserWriters
o The LaserWriter 8 driver allows some printers to print using a larger
imageable print area on the page. If your printer does so, you may find that
text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area."
and
"LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630
o When you are printing at 600 dots per inch (dpi), bitmapped images may
appear
with lines across the image."
Am I missing something? We have, on the one hand, Apple's current top of the
line printer. On the other hand, we have their very latest release of the
software to drive that printer (less than a week old, I believe). Yet if I am
to
believe what I read, I may not be able to print bitmapped images properly.
Could someone who's used LW 8.0 for some time, in an environment where a lot
of
bitmapped graphics are printed along with text please tell me: Is this
something
that happens rarely, sometimes, or often? Or am I simply misunderstanding the
READ ME file?
I'd love to move 50+ heavy users to LW 8.1.1 if for no other reason than to
eliminate printer wars (which I seem to recall LW 8.0 was touted as doing),
but
I can't afford to do so if they are going to have interesting lines through
their graphics or if their MS Word and PageMaker documents suddenly start
reformatting themselves.
ADVthanxANCE for any advice you can provide.

I have tried Apple's LaserWriter 8.1.1, and as they stated, yes, it is more

longer crashes.
BUT...
At least for me, scaling at 96% or less doesn't work properly! Scaling to 97%
words fine, but 96% prints as I would expect it to had I said 75%!!!
This is true even for Print Window in Finder's File-menu.
I'm using an accelerated SE under System 7.1 with System Hardware Update 2.0.
The Adobe version, 8.0.1, does NOT have the scaling problem, although it DOES
have compatibility problems (SuperLaserSpool 3.1 can't handle it).

The Finder has been revised a bit to eventually enable full Apple Script

System 7 and System 7 Pro. No longer is there one Mac operating system,
there are two. The only difference between them is that Pro comes with all
the bells and whistles that many people do not need but that business users
need such as AppleScripting, AOCE, QuickTime, etc. It's really just a
packaging difference. One comes with all the extras and costs more, the
other is stripped down and costs less. Otherwise, they are the same.

PowerTalk is the client collection of software that is Apple's Open

Subject: PC emulation on MAC [A]
Hello netters
To the following post I hereby summarize.
> Is SoftPC the only option? I heard it emulates only a 286. Does anyone
> know of a better version in the works?
There are 5 different approaches, only 2 of them really run PC software:
1. Software emulation - Only by Insigna. Only 286, 3 levels of sophistication
2. Hardware - Orange NuBus cards, PC in a MAC, 386 for $600, 486 for $1100.
This is a REAL PC inside the MAC case. Requires a NuBus slot and uses MAC
disk.
Fastest. NO EMULATION HERE but a real PC.
3. Data Conversion tools. By DataViz, Apple, and by some programs the can
read data from their PC counterpart program.
Examples: Apple file Exchange can convert data from/to PC format. Claris
Extensions can add options to this ("free") tool. Micro$oft programs have
PC versions, and the MAC versions recognize PC data formats. MS Excel
reads also Lotus & Lotus like data files from PC (I used this). MS Word
can open PC files. etc. DataViz's MacLinkPlusPC is a special purpose tool
worth having.
4. connectivy - networks with PC and MACs. Data transfer / sharing.
This is a large subject, and I shall not discuss it here.
5. PowerPC - wait for it! It MAY be able to run MAC and PC programs on the
SAME
machine. This subject is open to discussion, and I would love to see more
opinions and data about this.
And last but not least - Eric Burger says:

Subject: Quadra 840av Video Capture (A)
I posted a request recently to try to ascertain the full-frame video
capture capabilities of the Quadra 840av. From the replies and answers
to queries from the local Apple rep, it would appear that the 840av can
capture full-frame video at 25 or 30fps to memory, the time dependant on
the amount of memory you have available.
It can capture full NTSC or PAL, but only in 16bit colour.
I haven't been able to determine the capture rate to disk, but it would
appear to depend to some extent on the speed of the particular disk,
however it seems there are some beta versions of add-on compression
boards out there, and these enable the capture of full-frame real-time
video to disk, virtually to broadcast standard.
To conclude, it would appear that the 840av is a match for boards such as
Radius Videovision and the like, and when the compression boards become
available, should more than equal the Videovision Studio, Digital film
etc. boards.

Subject: Recipe Software
every year or so, I put out a message asking the net if anyone has heard of a
decent recipe/cookbook application for the Micintosh. This would need to be a
stand-alone application, not requiring HyperCard or FileMaker or anything else
that is clunky (like Hypercard) or requires purchasing something that costs
much more than a recipe database is worth (like FileMaker or HyperCard for
those who didn't get it free with their Mac).
I'm opening the floor for suggestions again, but I may have finally found
something on my own. This month's Macworld has an ad for Mac's Place
featuring an item called "Mangia!" which is supposedly just what I want. I
ordered it last night and should have it next week (not in stock yet). The
price was $34.95. If there's interest (and I usually get a smattering of
interest in this topic despite the predominance of single young men who
probably don't cook in a venue such as this), I'll let people know what I
think about the program.
Anyone know of any others (Commercial or Shareware/Freeware)? I'm looking for
stand-alone applications -- not HyoerCard stacks or Filemaker apps -- which
support automatic ingredient proportion conversion (i.e., I can alter a recipe
for 4 to serve 7 with no problem), measurement conversion (cups to ml, tsps to
tblsps, etc.), and adding of one's own recipes (preferably as a separate
file). Preferred is the ability to output a recipe to a text file (though I
may find a reason to use/pay for Print2PICT if the program doesn't have this
option) and searching by ingredient. A PC couterpart would be nice, too.
Naturally, it must print recipes and, of course, run on a Macintosh (I'm
putting an SE in my kitchen once I find my dream application!). I've tried
(and own) Dinner at Eight (sorely outdated and never upgraded) and Micro
Kitchen Companion (a poor DOS port; they didn't even bother to give it a Mac
interface!). Nutridata, makers of Dietbalancer (Mac and PC), recently intro'd
a cook book program for the PC: anyone know of a Mac version?
Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone with information. Cheers and happy
eating!

>Carina and Voyager II are alive and kicking...
Yes, Voyager II is a real product and in my opinion it is extremely good.
The original program was impressive in its own right, but the update is
really useful. As an amateur astronomer, it is one of my most-used tools -
software or otherwise.
That said, I must also say that I've had some problems with getting any
kind of technical support from the company. Although Voyager II is really
great, it is not without bugs. I have written to Carina about them and got
no response. Then I tried the direct approach, calling by phone. The
person answering was rather vague and skeptical about there being any
problems. I got the feeling he thought I was a crank. After convincing
him I knew what I was talking about, he mentioned something about a
possible problem that had been fixed some time ago. He asked me the date
of my disk; he couldn't ask the version number because the program doesn't
bear any. This seems to be an example of "versionless secret bug fixes"
which go unannounced to the general public, a really nasty policy IMHO.
Finally, after waiting several weeks, the promised replacement version has
still not arrived. I suspect my request went into the trash, along with
the other letters I'd mailed to them months ago detailing the problems. Oh
well. Why am I writing this? I guess I'd like to know if anyone else has
had similar experiences, and if so, what kind of success you've had in
getting satisfaction. I hope the tone of this message doesn't seem too
"flaming", because I still think it's a great program that I wouldn't want
to be without.

I was pretty surprised at that ad as well! I don't think it's
censorship for a magazine to choose what advertising it will run (look at
Macworld), but simply a matter of income. Are they that hard up for
advertising dollars?!

Subject: Where in the World is HyperCard??
I've been out of the Mac world for a while and I've lost track
of where HyperCard is and how to get the latest release. Last
I remember Claris was taking over HyperCard. The local dealers
don't have any idea except to tell me that HyperCard is up to
version 2.1 and they have the HyperCard Development package for
$149.00. My questions are;
1. What is the latest version of HyperCard?
2. Can I get a copy of the user version of HyperCard?
3. Where can I get the user version of HyperCard?
4. Do I need the Development pakage to make minor changes?
5. What is HyperPlayer?
6. What are HyperPlayer's capabilities and limitations?
7. What is the future of HyperCard?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Why doesn't Afterdark launch (Q)
It has just occurred to me that Afterdark no longer comes on of its own
accord, i.e., no matter how long my mac sits idle, I the screen ramins
unchanged. It doesn't seem to be influenced by my choice of value for the
"Sleep in X Minutes" box. I have checked the "System IQ Activity Monitor"
box. If I go into the control panel and click on the Afterdark icon, I can
demo any of the Afterdark files. Also, I can always go to the sleep now
corner and Afterdark launches. I have version 2.0x of Afterdark and am
running System 6.0.8. Does anybody have any ideas?

Fine for you, but what about us PowerBook users? It's just one more piece
of equipment to tote around. Nothing against copy-protection . . . it's
the METHOD that I disagree with.
In defense of Nissus, though, it's common for a software company (like the
ones I've worked for) to sell three or four copies of a product to an
ENTIRE country and then get calls to the support line from people who've
bought the product from a store that bought one copy and duplicated it in
their store and sold the copies. . . .
Dongles are about the only option they're left with . . . advances in
portable computing just make it an unfortunately antiquated option.
